Introduction

Shiva is called Mahadev because he is the highest consciousness in the Sanatan Dharma and a giver of inner peace, clarity, prosperity, knowledge, and health.

Sanatan Dharma is the authentic name of Hinduism [Ebook Kobo store] and lord Shiva is the primordial, primary lord in Sanatan Dharma, the one known as creator, preserver, and destroyer of the world

In this post, I have answered why lord Shiva called Mahadev and what is the meaning of the name Mahadev.

So, let’s get started.

Mahadev Shiva
Aum Namah Shivaya

Why lord Shiva is called the god of gods?

Lord Shiva is the glorious god in Sanatan Dharma. In fact, he is the Param Brahma, which means he is shapeless, dimensionless, and attributes less supreme consciousness.

After creating the metaphysical world, other divine celestial beings (energies or deities) that came from Shiva requested and prayed to Shiva to personify himself so that they could experience and interact with Shiva.

The deities desired to understand their essence and the reason for their existence. As a result, they prayed to their creator. Shapeless Shiva appeared to them in the mystic form of infinite light. It was the figurative representation of Shiva as the cosmic egg known as the golden womb, Hriyangarbha.

In that metaphorical form, Shiva enlightened them and allotted responsibilities to each of them. But those metaphysical divinities further requested formless Shiva to manifest one particular form so they could comfortably experience and interact with him.

After accepting their request, lord Shiva manifested himself in the bodily form so that others may experience and connect with him. Thus, the first physical form of Shiva was Rudra. But it was the most terrible and aggressive form of Shiva. To calm his violent side, Shiva manifested another form as Shiva Shankara and Rudra became inactive within Shiva Shankara.

Hence, Shankara is the most peaceful and loved form of lord Shiva, which is close to the heart of Shiva’s devotees. Lord Shankara is also the same form that lives at Mount Kailash with his family. It is one of the most revered forms of lord Shiva known by the name of auspicious one. Vedas defines lord Shiva as the ultimate alpha male. Shankar’s name holds the significance of being the one who removes all doubts and confusion from life.

As the Shankara, lord Shiva is the strongest as well as the most peaceful and beautiful form of supreme divinity [Paperback Amazon US].

He is an unborn, immortal, and omnipresent great god of the entire world.

One name that truly defines the influence of lord Shiva in Sanatan Dharma is Mahadev.

The reason I’m saying this is Mahadev means the god of the gods (the greatest god). It implies that others are deities, whereas Shiva is their mighty god, Mahadev.

  • Maha = the greatest one
  • Dev = consciousness

Therefore, Mahadev Shiva means the greatest consciousness. He is the soul maker with no starting and endpoints. And in the physical form as well, lord Shiva Shankara has no self-need. He is the supreme Vairagi, self-sufficient and independent. In short, he is complete in himself.

By chanting the name of Shiva, all the pain, hardships, and despair disappear from the life of Shiva’s name chanter. Aum Namah Shivaya is the most revered mantra of lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati is the beloved partner of Shiva. Both operate as dark matter and dark energy.

Lord Shiva is famous for his generosity. The massive section of Shiva devotees calls him Bholenath because lord Shiva is innocent and naïve like a little child.

Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are complementary to each other.

As Mahadev, lord Shiva is the giver of peace, prosperity, health, and fortune. Those who revere Shiva are free from inaccuracy and impurity, along with that they always feel calm, healthy, and energetic. In fact, Shiva is called Vishnu Vallabha, which means Shiva is most dear to lord Vishnu.

The untold truth is even lord Vishnu is incomplete without lord Shiva. Lord Shiva occupies half of lord Vishnu’s heart, while his devotees and goddess Lakshmi encompass the remaining part. Even during the meditational sleep known as YogNindra, lord Vishnu meditates on the name and mantra of lord Shiva.

This special bond between Shiva and Vishnu doesn’t end there. Lord Vishnu is the elder brother of the goddess Parvati. As already mentioned, the goddess Parvati is the loving spouse of lord Shiva. In that way, lord Vishnu is the brother-in-law of lord Shiva.

Worshiping Shiva implies worshiping Vishnu, and worshiping Vishnu implies worshiping Shiva. Lord Vishnu never stays in a place where lord Shiva is not valuable and respected. And when lord Vishnu is not present at that place, goddess Lakshmi (goddess of prosperity and wealth) leaves that place with lord Vishnu.

Shiva mediates in the name of lord Rama, a significant incarnation of lord Vishnu. It is all about the mutual respect and affection for each other. Lord Vishnu is the greatest devotee of lord Shiva. On the other side, Shiva is the greatest devotee of lord Vishnu.

Why Shiva is called Mahadev?

At the end of the world, lord Brahma gets merged into lord Vishnu, and lord Vishnu gets merged with lord Shiva. Finally, only Shiva remains and transforms into the Hriyangarbha as the cosmic womb.

Lord Shiva prefers a simplistic lifestyle in which he loves to accept everyone into his refugee. Those who are ignored, boycotted, and abandoned by society often find solace in Shiva. I’m also one of them. Lord Shiva is the protector of the righteousness and destroyer of the darkness.

The more someone reads about lord Shiva, the closer they come to Shiva. In his physical form, lord Shiva is extraordinary, and there is no one like Shiva in the entire cosmos. Those who worship Shiva become transcendental in their lives and attain all kinds of Siddhis (powers) from Shiva.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् | उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ||

The devotees of Shiva always experience calmness in their nature. And they know that Shiva never compares his devotees with each other. It is the reason Shiva devotees never perceive the world based on inferiority and superiority complex. They know that Shiva smears the cremation ashes, which means this world is destroyable. Thus, we should not waste our lives living an egotistical life. An interesting fact that I want to disclose here is due to smearing ashes, Shiva’s skin tone is whitish.

Another interesting fact is Shiva doesn’t have any roof over his head and prefers to live a yogic life, as he is also the first yogi known as Adiyogi. Various mounts surrounded Mount Kailash, forming a lotus shape. When we study human chakra, we find those chakras in lotus form. It is scientific and well-documented in the Vedic literature that anybody can experience Shiva’s presence by invoking the Kundalini Shakti within them.

Lord Shiva is the greatest giver. Those who protect the innocent and the weak are often likened to Shiva, who embodies this virtue beautifully. He graciously took on the poison of others and distributed the elixir to them, showing his selflessness.

Shiva is the father figure for his devotees and there are many lessons that people can learn from lord Shiva. Parents often choose to name their newborn children after lord Shiva because of his many virtues.

Mahadev God
  • Sagacity
  • Compassion
  • Simplicity
  • Unbelievable
  • Strength
  • Reliable
  • Charming
  • Love the beauty of nature.
  • Great responsibility comes with remarkable power
  • Live an ascetic life, but be an exceptional lover of your consort.
