Introduction

How to become a sanyasi is a unique post dedicated to those seeking inner peace. The truth is, Sanyas is an integral part of Hindu philosophy, primarily associated with Lord Shiva. It’s crucial to understand this concept, yet many people remain unaware of it or hold misunderstandings that can lead to confusion.

In this short article, I have described the meaning of Sanyas in simple terms and how following this concept in life can make our lives stress-free and joyous.

As we grow and navigate through life, we often find ourselves experiencing more stress and complications. Small irritations begin to affect us more than they should. Many people lose interest in forming empathetic relationships, as they feel so broken inside that they distance themselves from others.

We start to feel a lack of time, love, and health. In the midst of this chaos, we often forget that life is a precious gift, and it’s important for people to understand their true purpose. Without a sense of this inner awakening, one cannot discover the strength within themselves and, therefore, cannot reach their full potential.

In this post, you will learn how a small shift in mindset can transform your perspective on life and liberate you from everything that holds you back. I am referring to living like a Sanyasi. But before that, let’s understand what Sanyas is.

What is Sanyas?

Many people who don’t understand the core philosophy of Hinduism believe that Sanyaas means abandoning their responsibilities and retreating to the Himalayas to meditate. This is not the actual meaning of Sanyas. However, it is a small part of it. Let me explain what I mean by the term Sanyas.

The concept of Sanyas revolves around detaching from material desires, stopping excessive thinking, achieving emotional balance, and removing all impurities from life. Those who embody these principles are called Sanyasis. This practice focuses on connecting with one’s inner reality, discovering the essence of inner Shiva, and establishing a harmony between creation and destruction.

In this context, I refer not to physical impurities of the human body, but to psychological impurities such as Kaam (lust), Krodh (anger), Moh (attachment), and Ahankara (ego), among others. Achieving freedom from these disorders on the path of true enlightenment, which leads to righteousness, is known as Vairagya. It represents the highest level of intellectual understanding, where external circumstances no longer hold significance.

The state of being a Sanyasi involves surrendering to the supreme consciousness. The question may arise: Who is the supreme consciousness? The answer is Lord Shiva. He is formless and attributeless, yet the supreme reality. He is revered by many names; he is the extraordinary force behind the creation of all, channeling the immense power of his Shakti, the Goddess of energy.

For the welfare of the cosmos, he manifested his various forms because he loves and cares for his creation. Sanyasi seeks power, courage, knowledge, and clarity from him because he is the lord of all, embodying compassion and generosity.

As a liberator, Lord Shiva frees his devotees, known as seekers, from the world’s infirmities and empowers them to follow the path of Dharma (righteousness). Hence, every Sanyasi is a protector of Dharma, which represents righteousness rather than religion.

To truly understand this concept, one must detach from life’s luxuries and engage in Sadhana (penance) to view life from an unfiltered perspective. Sadhana represents devotion towards absolute consciousness, Shiva, which leads you to the path of Manav Seva (serving humanity).

The more you serve humanity, the greater your spiritual powers will grow, and you will get more connected to Lord Shiva. The worldly sins will not be able to ensnare you.

The only thing you need to do is adopt an austere lifestyle and restrict yourself to precise practices to attain such siddhis. You can follow any substantiated Sadhu (sage) and receive Deeksha (enlightenment) from them. There are various philosophical paths available, including the Aghor devotees, Nagas, Akhadas, and others.

Taking Deeksha signifies a spiritual awakening enlightened by Gurus. For instance, Nagas do not wear clothes and embody a pure essence that connects them to spiritual mindfulness. They adorn nature and worship Goddess Shakti as her newly born son, free from all malicious thoughts. Every Sanyasi feels a sense of Samarapan (dedication) for humanity.

Therefore, a genuine Sanyasi will always show compassion for everyone, including animals, rivers, mountains, trees, humans, and even the enemies of humanity. That is what they have learned from Lord Shiva, who teaches how to practice detachment properly and to operate from a space of joy and happiness while caring for others.

How to be a Sanyasi despite being in a household?

There are a few points to take into consideration; following these rules can lead to blissfulness, and you could become a Sanyasi who is in the household.

1) You don’t need to leave your family & responsibilities to become a Sanyasi.

Yes, there is no need to travel to the Himalayas to become a Sanyasi. While this might sound confusing, you don’t have to leave your family behind to embrace Sanyaas. In fact, Sanyaas and household life can complement each other. Even Lord Shiva has a loving family. Fulfilling all your responsibilities without becoming entangled in selfish desires is the simplest way to purify your atman (soul).

2 ) Forgiveness is the attribute of the Sadhus

Having strong feelings against others is a sign of weakness, while the ability to forgive demonstrates true strength. The ultimate goal of becoming a Sanyasi is to free oneself from all forms of negative energy. Therefore, a Sanyasi does not harbor troubling feelings toward anyone. But they are always ready to protect Dharma.

3 ) Acquiring constant Knowledge and Siddhis from Lord Shiva

Shiva is the greatest transformer, the kindest protector of all, the one who is known for simplicity and grace. When a devotee has true devotion to Shiva, also known as Mahadev, he will always be present for them.

Shiva, the Lord of Yogis and Sanyasis, is the source of all existence. These Sanyasis seek Siddhis, knowledge, and Shakti (energies) from Him. Shiva is also known as Adiyogi, meaning he is the first yogi to share his ancient wisdom with the world for the betterment of humanity.

At the highest level of chakra awakening, Goddess Shakti meets Shiva at the Sahasrara Chakra, thereby liberating every yogi from the constraints of the material world and opening the door to the divine elixir.

Take some time for yourself, and introduce yourself to Yoga. It is an ancient Indian science that harmonizes body, soul, and mind. If you are passionate about achieving instant peace of mind, you should try incorporating meditation and pranayama into your routine.

Eating organic, vegan food and engaging in prayer can help you connect more deeply with your inner self. It’s recommended to avoid consuming meat and other animal products for a more wholesome experience.

4 ) Sanyasis are optimistic and guardians of moral values

The entire sanyasi community is filled with hope and serves as a guardian of moral values. They dedicate their time to chanting the mantra of the Supreme. They understand that life flows like a stream of water, and it is essential to keep that stream pure.

This means refraining from any actions that violate moral principles or the laws of the state or nation.

Misconception Associated with Sanyasi

1 ) People think that Sanyasi has nothing to do with society

In reality, Sanyasis have a profound connection with society. Those who have chosen the path of Sanyas are individuals who act without self-interest. As a result, they contribute significantly to nation-building. Their essential role is to strengthen the nation’s roots.

We must extend to them the respect they deserve.

2) A sanyasi is always a Yogi {Beware of Fake Sanyasi}

I want to clarify that I have great respect for Sanyasis and believe they are a source of pride for our nation. They dedicate themselves to divine service; however, I would like to present a point for your consideration.

A person who presents themselves as a Sanyasi but engages in impurities cannot truly be considered a Sanyasi. It is essential for individuals to recognize the traits of a fake Sanyasi. Therefore, do not follow anyone unthinkingly in your quest for a guru.

Take the time to analyze and research those you consider potential gurus. In my view, your true guru resides within you (Shiva). Lord Shiva embodies the remarkable qualities of a true guru. His attributes are exceptional and inspiring in every way.

These are the characteristics of a genuine Sanyasi. If you can cultivate these traits within yourself, you can embody the essence of a Sanyasi without the need to abandon your family. Aim to live a simple lifestyle.

Detach yourself from the distractions mentioned above. Appreciate and love the beauty of nature. Commit yourself to a life that is not self-centered and strive to help others.

Find joy in the little things and embrace life with an open heart.
