Why do people feel connected to Lord Shiva?

These days, you may find that many people are getting devotedly inclined towards Lord Shiva. After encountering them, you may wonder why these people feel connected to Lord Shiva. To understand this connection, you need to learn about a common journey that most men go through.

So let’s get started!

When an ordinary boy transitions into a man and accepts responsibility for his life and family, reality hits him differently. Often, this process shatters many of his personal dreams, leading him to make sacrifices to meet his basic needs, like food, shelter, security, and societal respect. He begins to work hard, realizing that no one will come to save him in this cruel world; everyone else seems ready to take advantage of him or assert dominance over him. His only safety net is accumulating as much money as possible.

This experience toughens him, making him resilient but also hard, often without him even realizing that in this struggle, he is becoming emotionless and numb, trapped in an illusion of strength.

One day, he enters the Shivalayas (temples of Lord Shiva) with a heavy heart, weighed down by life’s powerlessness and uncertainty. He realizes that no one is genuinely by his side; those around him only care for him when it serves their own interests. This realization emotionally devastates him. As he gazes intently at the idol of Lord Shiva, tears begin to roll down his cheeks. In that moment, he instinctively drops to his knees in reverence to honor Lord Shiva. Tears may be rolling down his face, but he is not unhappy.

For the first time, he feels a sense of inner calm, knowing that someone is looking back at him with genuine care, without judgment. The whole experience makes him emotionally attached to Lord Shiva. He realizes that he is having a divine experience as an electric pulse begins in his lower back and travels upward, igniting a surge of emotions. For the first time, he understands what it means to be still in a chaotic world where people are constantly chasing desires to satisfy their egos or pleasures. The anguish in his heart, born from being deceived for the ambitions of others, begins to fade away.

In that moment, he finds the answer to the question: Why do people feel connected to Lord Shiva? He realizes that Lord Shiva’s unconditional love for his devotees draws people closer to him. The pain in their hearts instantly connects them to Lord Shiva, especially when they see the snake coiled three times around his neck. Those who are left behind and tortured find relief in him. For these individuals, Lord Shiva is not just a deity; He is an emotion.

When Lord Shiva resides in the core of a person’s heart, they forget all fears and challenges, allowing them to believe in themselves. This empowerment comes from the realization that Lord Shiva holds the threads of everyone’s life. He is the ultimate observer, immersed in deep penance, yet his gaze encompasses the entire cosmos. He knows which of his devotees need his assistance and care. Lord Shiva gives clarity and strength to devotees so they can head towards righteousness.

The fact is that devotees of Lord Shiva are different; they have nothing to prove to the world. Their freedom and spiritual upliftment are more crucial to them. Thus, they don’t seek to assert their dominance over others because they see Shiva’s reflection in every being. Lord Shiva destroys all their darkness and liberates his devotees from the burdens of accumulated sins. For many devotees, this inner transformation naturally leads them toward vegetarianism.

This transformation doesn’t come from following a dogma, but from a profound love for the entire cosmos and every living being in it. Compassion takes over your heart as you realize that Lord Shiva is smiling at your every good deed and is lovingly watching over you.

These devotees feel that Lord Shiva is with them in every moment. They express their ownership of this divine connection much like a child does with a loving parent. Their devotion to Shiva is so deep that they don’t feel any competition; they flow with the love in their hearts for him.

When Lord Shiva enters a person’s life, he first breaks their ego, clears their illusions, and eliminates their fear, helping them believe they can face and overcome all of life’s challenges on their own. If something is out of their control, they can call upon Lord Shiva with reverence for guidance. He will definitely provide that guidance as a caring father because he genuinely cares for his devotees.

He realizes that snakes in society are often disrespected and mistreated because of their venom and the fear people have of them. Because of this fear, people tend to kill snakes or shun them from their communities. When snakes are marginalized and feel rejected everywhere, only Lord Shiva offers them refuge, increasing their respect by wearing them as a garland. This realization leads him to understand that Lord Shiva is one of the kindest and most powerful deities in Sanatan Dharma.

This moment prompts him to reflect on his life, leading him to realize he should let go of past grievances and start anew, keeping Lord Shiva in his heart. After all, Shiva is the one who consumed the cosmic poison to protect the world from its deadly effects and distributed the elixir to others without asking anything in return so that the cosmos could survive.
In the highest form, he is the ultimate creator, preserver, and destroyer of the cosmos.

However, what attracts devotees to him is his innocence and simplicity. It is the reason one of Lord Shiva’s names is Bholenath. Despite being the most mighty and omnipresent, Shiva lives a very humble lifestyle at Mount Kailash so that his devotees could feel his presence around him.

Lord Shiva is not only the primary deity in Sanatan Dharma but also a fatherly figure. People love him for various personal reasons; some seek health, strength, and courage, while others seek knowledge and prosperity. He is known as the greatest giver, fully aware of the needs of his genuine devotees. Interestingly, many of his true devotees do not ask for anything in return, trusting that whatever Shiva provides is in their best interest. Shiva is unbiased and delivers justice to everyone.

The most fascinating aspect of becoming a true devotee of Shiva is cultivating a deep reverence for Shree Ram as well. The name “Shree Ram” is held in the heart of Lord Shiva, as Shree Ram incarnated on earth to exemplify the ideal path of righteousness for all of humanity. Lord Shiva desires that his true devotees follow the path of Dharma established by Shree Ram, because he doesn’t take birth on earth as Lord Vishnu incarnates himself. It is the special responsibility of Lord Vishnu alone, while Lord Shiva transcends such responsibility and dwells in his vairagya (dispassion).

But one thing is sure, you cannot attain Shiva’s affection if you do not value Shree Ram’s presence in Sanatan Dharma. Similarly, you cannot please Shree Ram without having reverence for Lord Shiva. The beautiful connection between Lord Shiva and Shree Ram is significant, as Shree Ram is none other than Lord Vishnu. If any true devotee notices a difference between the two, it means they are far removed from reality. Those who understand this appreciate the bond between Lord Shiva and Shree Ram. However, Lord Shiva’s form resonates most with them.
